At Marriage and Civil Union Court, couples are joined in marriage or civil union by a Cook County judge.  A valid marriage or civil union license and a $10.00 administrative fee are required.

Couples should arrive no later than 30 minutes prior to closing.

Marriages and civil unions are also performed at the suburban municipal district courthouses.  Times and restrictions vary so call in advance. Please select from below for details:

Where do I obtain a marriage or civil union license?

Marriage and civil union licenses may be purchased at the Cook County Clerk’s Bureau of Vital Records, Marriage Division.

Can I make an appointment for my marriage or civil union?

Appointments are required for ceremonies performed at the Chicago Cultural Center.

How do I arrange to have my ceremony performed at the Chicago Cultural Center?

A total of ten (10) marriage and civil union ceremonies are performed by judges at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 East Washington Street in Chicago on only one Saturday per month and are by appointment only.  

Ceremonies are performed only between 10:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. 

Appointments must be made in person at the Marriage and Civil Union Court located on the lower level of 119 West Randolph Street. When making the appointment, couples must present a valid marriage or civil union license, as well as pay a $10 cash only court fee. Appointments cannot be made more than 60 days prior to the ceremony date.

Cameras are permitted.  

Couples are limited to only 20 guests per ceremony the Chicago Cultural Center due to time constraints.  

Couples are strongly encouraged to make their appointments as soon as possible after receiving their marriage or civil union license because ceremonies at the Chicago Cultural Center are very popular and book quickly.

Do I need a witness or witnesses for the ceremony?

No, witnesses are not necessary. However, you may bring up to 15 guests to view your ceremony. Couples joined at the Cultural Center may only bring 20 guests due to time constraints.  

What are the hours for Marriage and Civil Union Court?

Hours at 119 West Randolph are:
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 12:00 noon, then 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
Closed on Sunday.

We ask that couples arrive no later than one half hour (30 minutes) prior to closing.
