Law Division

The Law Division is established pursuant to General Order 1.2, 2.1 (a) of the General Orders of the Circuit Court of Cook County.

The Law Division hears civil suits for recovery of monetary damages in excess of $30,000 in the city of Chicago, and in excess of $100,000 in the suburban districts, as well as many types of administrative reviews. Cases heard include:

NOTICE

Judge William D. Maddux, Presiding Judge of the Law Division announces:

In accordance with Law Division General Administrative Orders 91-4 and 10-2, all cases on Motion Calendars "B" and "D" with case numbers 09 L 8000 and older will be reassigned to Motion Calendar "E" Judge Kathy M. Flanagan, Supervising Judge of the Motion Section, for Focused Case Management.

All future case management dates shall stand but will be heard before Judge Kathy M. Flanagan in Room 2210.

Trial dates will remain and WILL NOT be affected by these reassignments.

NOTICE RE: CASES INVOLVING ULLICO CASUALTY COMPANY

On March 11, 2013, Ullico Casualty Company, a Delaware property and casualty insurance company, was placed into receivership for purposes of rehabilitation. A “Rehabilitation and Injunction Order” was entered by the Delaware court, and enjoins all persons or entities from instituting or further prosecuting all actions, pre-trial conferences, trials, etc., involving any person or entity insured by Ullico Casualty Company, for a period of 180 days.

It is anticipated that there will be many motions filed in the Law Division and First Municipal Department, asking that the cases involving Ullico Casualty Company be stayed and/or transferred to the Insurance Calendar.

The interests of justice and judicial economy will be best served by the designation of one judge to hear these motions on a consolidated basis.

All cases involving persons or entities insured by Ullico Casualty Company shall be set for an initial status hearing on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at 11:30 AM, before Judge Kathy M. Flanagan, Room 2210, Richard J. Daley Center.
