The duty of the Office of Official Court Reporters is to record certain court proceedings verbatim either through the taking of stenographic notes or by an electronic recording system approved by the Illinois Supreme Court. The Office ensures that all transcripts prepared as the official record of court proceedings are prepared pursuant to applicable Illinois Supreme Court rules.
The Office of Official Court Reporters employs 220 court reporters and 15 digital recording court specialists.
Computer Access Realtime Translation (CART) is available upon request, in which an Official Court Reporter is able to produce an instant transcript projected onto a computer screen while the court proceeding is underway. CART is another alternative for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing besides sign language interpreters and assisted listening devices.
Requests for CART must be made two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled hearing date. Contact the Office of Interpreter Services for details.
