- Gain an understanding of the basic philosophy of the court and the need for an underlying humanitarian conviction.
- Gain practical knowledge of the Juvenile Court process.
- Have an opportunity to apply some of the theoretical concepts of casework and the helping process of real life situations.

- Time commitment preferred is a full semester of 13 weeks with a minimum of two full days worked each week.
- Selection is determined through the application, reference check, an interview process and a criminal record investigation.
- Assignments will be based on academic background, interest of the student, staffing needs of the Department and supervisor availability.
- Interns must be earning college credit.
Experiences and Responsibilities - Orientation to the Juvenile Court Act as law and the court as an instrument of
the Act. - Structure of the court and its various programs and processes.
- Observation in the courtrooms on various kinds of cases and types of court
hearings. - A Juvenile Temporary Detention Center tour and visits to the Juvenile Temporary
Detention Center and School. - Orientation to the role of the probation officer (duties, powers and
responsibilites). - Field visits with one or several probation officers.
- Opportunity to work with a probation officer or alone on cases of supervision,
probation and progress reporting. - Experience in writing up cases and attending the court hearing accompanied by
the probation officer or supervisor. - Supervisory conferences and unit meetings.
