SOCIAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT
Administration
The Social Service Department of the Circuit Court of Cook County has office locations throughout Cook County: eight (8) in District 1 (Chicago) and five (5) in suburban Chicago Districts 2 through 6. It was developed in 1911 and has evolved into a department of 260. Staff includes professional caseworkers that provide post-dispositional services to approximately 22,000 offenders who were found guilty of felony, misdemeanor, traffic and ordinance offenses. The Department employs approximately 164 professional casework staff and 96 administrative, management and support staff. It operates on a budget appropriation of $12,868,000.00
A computer case management system is used whereby caseworkers track each defendant using demographic information, court related data such as conditions of the court order and whether they have been met, a synopsis of each appointment/contact, and any other pertinent information that presents itself during the duration of a case. While under the court's jurisdiction and by using technology to communicate with other court agencies and law enforcement, each defendant is monitored regularly for new offenses and charges.
The Department actively recruits in colleges and universities for its Internship Program. The program involves majors in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology and Business who are seeking a learning experience in the criminal justice system.
