Sponsored by the Circuit Court of Cook County and Illinois Institute of Technology's Chicago-Kent College of Law, the Advice Desk provides free legal assistance to pro se defendants in municipal court cases. (Pro se defendants represent themselves in court.) The Advice Desk is staffed by an attorney, interns and law student volunteers who interview and advise defendants. General legal advice, help with the preparation of court-required documents such as pleadings and motions and assistance with settlement negotiations are available at the Advice Desk. Assistance for the following types of cases is provided at the Advice Desk: - tenant evictions*
- personal injury
- contract
- tort
- bill collection
- garnishment actions
| *Among the 4,200 pro se defendants served annually by the Advice Desk, 60 to 70 percent are tenants involved in eviction disputes.
